I play lead guitar and vocals in a rock cover band. Often I had to hear sly comments about it, referring to teenage behavior, to ungrown kids, to the uselessness of the whole thing &#8211; who will ever care about you guys? Well, the point is completely different. We do it for ourselves. Everyone should do it, go our and practice their own art. It is not necessary to make a job out of it. We are born artists. Kids do art spontaneously. Then we teach them to grow, they have to study, find a job, take up responsibilities. Art is for artists. But why? It would be healthy if we practiced some art side by side to our own duties. It would be good for our mind and soul. The ones who do it have less problems in carrying on with every day&#8217;s life. I speak by direct experience&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\">So I strongly advice you to go on and read Young-ha Kim&#8217;s own words, not mine, in this excerpt from his TED talk, or watch the whole video above.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell flx-s:1 p-r:4 \">\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><em>Excerpt from Young-ha Kim&#8217;s TED talk.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">The theme of my talk today is,<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;Be an artist, right now.&#8221;<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Most people, when this subject is brought up,<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">get tense and resist it:<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;Art doesn&#8217;t feed me, and right now I&#8217;m busy.<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">I have to go to school, get a job,<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">send my kids to lessons &#8230; &#8220;<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">You think, &#8220;I&#8217;m too busy. I don&#8217;t have time for art.&#8221;<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">There are hundreds of reasons why we can&#8217;t be artists right now.<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Don&#8217;t they just pop into your head?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">There are so many reasons why we can&#8217;t be,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">indeed, we&#8217;re not sure why we should be.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">We don&#8217;t know why we should be artists,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but we have many reasons why we can&#8217;t be.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Why do people instantly resist the idea of associating themselves with art?<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Perhaps you think art is for the greatly gifted<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">or for the thoroughly and professionally trained.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">And some of you may think you&#8217;ve strayed too far from art.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Well you might have, but I don&#8217;t think so.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">We are all born artists.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell d:f h:full m-b:.5 m-b:0@md w:12 \">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Kids do art.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They don&#8217;t get tired and they have fun doing it.<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">If you have kids, you know what I mean.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Almost everything kids do is art.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They draw with crayons on the wall.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They dance <\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">the kids&#8217; own dance.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">So they dance a strange dance and inflict their singing on everyone.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Perhaps their art is something only their parents can bear,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">and because they practice such art all day long,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">people honestly get a little tired around kids.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Kids do art.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They don&#8217;t get tired and they have fun doing it.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">When kids are on the beach, most of them love playing in the water.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">But some of them spend a lot of time in the sand,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">making mountains and seas &#8212; well, not seas,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but different things &#8212; people and dogs, etc.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">But parents tell them,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;It will all be washed away by the waves.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">In other words, it&#8217;s useless.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">There&#8217;s no need.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">But kids don&#8217;t mind.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They have fun in the moment<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">and they keep playing in the sand.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Kids don&#8217;t do it because someone told them to.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They aren&#8217;t told by their boss<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">or anyone, they just do it.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \"><\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell d:f h:full m-b:.5 m-b:0@md w:12 \">\n<div class=\" a-i:c d:f j-c:c p-r:.5 w:2 \"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Unfortunately, at some point our art &#8212; such a joyful pastime &#8212; ends.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Kids have to go to lessons, to school, do homework<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">and of course they take piano or ballet lessons,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but they aren&#8217;t fun anymore.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">You&#8217;re told to do it and there&#8217;s competition. How can it be fun?<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">If you&#8217;re in elementary school and you still draw on the wall,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">you&#8217;ll surely get in trouble with your mom.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Besides,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">if you continue to act like an artist as you get older,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">you&#8217;ll increasingly feel pressure &#8212;<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">people will question your actions and ask you to act properly.\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Unfortunately, the little artists within us<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">are choked to death before we get to fight against the oppressors of art.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They get locked in.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">That&#8217;s our tragedy.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell flx-s:1 p-r:4 \">\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">So what happens when little artists get locked in, banished or even killed?<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Our artistic desire doesn&#8217;t go away.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">We want to express, to reveal ourselves,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but with the artist dead, the artistic desire reveals itself in dark form.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">In karaoke bars, there are always people who sing<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;She&#8217;s Gone&#8221; or &#8220;Hotel California,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">miming the guitar riffs.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Usually they sound awful. Awful indeed.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Some people turn into rockers.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Or some people dance in clubs.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">People who would have enjoyed telling stories<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">end up trolling on the Internet all night long.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">That&#8217;s how a writing talent reveals itself on the dark side.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell flx-s:1 p-r:4 \">\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Sometimes we see dads get more excited than their kids<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">playing with Legos or putting together plastic robots.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They go, &#8220;Don&#8217;t touch it. Daddy will do it for you.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">The kid has already lost interest and is doing something else,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but the dad alone builds castles.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">This shows the artistic impulses inside us are suppressed, not gone.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">But they can often reveal themselves negatively, in the form of jealousy.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">You know the song &#8220;I would love to be on TV&#8221;? Why would we love it?<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">TV is full of people who do what we wished to do,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but never got to.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They dance, they act &#8212; and the more they do, they are praised.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">So we start to envy them.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">We become dictators with a remote and start to criticize the people on TV.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;He just can&#8217;t act.&#8221; &#8220;You call that singing? She can&#8217;t hit the notes.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">We easily say these sorts of things.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">We get jealous, not because we&#8217;re evil,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but because we have little artists pent up inside us.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">That&#8217;s what I think.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell flx-s:1 p-r:4 \">\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">What should we do then?<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Yes, that&#8217;s right.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Right now, we need to start our own art.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Right this minute, we can turn off TV,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">log off the Internet,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">get up and start to do something.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">This devil will tell you hundreds of reasons<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">why you can&#8217;t write:<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;People will laugh at you. This is not good writing!<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">What kind of sentence is this? Look at your handwriting!&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">It will say a lot of things.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">You have to\u00a0do things fast so the devil can&#8217;t catch up.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">And in this moment, the nagging devil disappears.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" Grid Grid--with-gutter d:f@md p-b:4 \">\n<div class=\" Grid__cell flx-s:1 p-r:4 \">\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Art is the ultimate goal.<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">It saves our souls and makes us live happily.<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">It helps us express ourselves and be happy without the help of alcohol or drugs.<\/a><\/em><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">So I can say this:<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">It&#8217;s not the hundreds of reasons why one can&#8217;t be an artist,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but rather, the one reason one must be that makes us artists.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Why we cannot be something is not important.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Most artists became artists because of the one reason.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">When we put the devil in our heart to sleep and start our own art,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">enemies appear on the outside.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Mostly, they have the faces of our parents.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">Sometimes they look like our spouses,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">but they are not your parents or spouses.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They are devils. Devils.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">They came to Earth briefly transformed<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">to stop you from being artistic, from becoming artists.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">And they have a magic question.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">When we say, &#8220;I think I&#8217;ll try acting. There&#8217;s a drama school in the community center,&#8221; or<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;I&#8217;d like to learn Italian songs,&#8221; they ask, &#8220;Oh, yeah? A play?
